When you try to cancel service, they transfer you to a “retention specialist”.

They did not retain.

    After a similar period of anger and frustration, I cancelled my cable modem with Time Warner at my apartment. It’s the same deal – I went through 25 menu options, but once I pushed the correct sequence of digits to tell them I wanted to cancel, I immediately got the retention specialist!
